Today, Facebook announced new features they were enabling to Facebook pages to encourage more user involvement and better exposure for a brand.  In my opinion, the new updates make it a no brainer as to why a brand should adopt a Page over a Group on Facebook.

The first update made was the addition of “Fan Photos” for Facebook Pages.  If you go to page.facebookadvice.com, the official Facebook Page for the book (add yourself as a fan!), you’ll notice a new link on the right allowing Fans of our page to post their own photos.  I’ve enabled this to allow you, our fans, to take pictures at the events Jason and I speak at, as well as other Facebook-worthy events, and share them with other Fans of the Page.  Feel free to post some photos of your own, but please keep them relevant!

Secondly, Facebook provided 2 new Apps, very long needed, which  enable you as a Page Admin to add your own, customized content to your Facebook Page.  The first app is the “static FBML” app, which can be found on (ironically), the “Pages” Facebook Page.  Don’t get discouraged by the name - most simple html tags should be able to be used in this App - with just a little knowledge you should be able to post your own content, similar to the “Buy our Book” widget we have on our Page.

The second App, also on the same Page as the “static FBML” App is the “Flash Player” App.  Add this if your company has a Flash widget they would like to share with the world.  These two changes, in particular are very big updates - with these, I promise you’ll start to see more and more Media companies build a presence on Facebook.  Flash is big in the Media world, and one of the reasons they are so big on MySpace.  This update is a wakeup call to MySpace, directly from Facebook.  BTW, the Flash or HTML you write can completely replace your Page’s Profile picture if you want - just select it when you edit your Profile picture on your Page.

Some changes that have been around for a little bit now:

  • You can modify your Page’s settings to be age-restrictive, in the case you are a Bar or club and want to only allow those over a certain age to view your Page.
  • You’ll notice on our Page we’ve moved the mini-feed all the way to the bottom.  This is now mov1able. (I wish we could just hide it completely!)
